Tags and Categories
Project Overview
The Tags and Categories Project centered around designing an innovative user experience that empowers users to create hierarchical and non-hierarchical organizational systems for their content. The primary goal was to revamp the existing functionality and present it in a modern and highly functional manner. Through this project, we aimed to provide users with a seamless and intuitive way to categorize and manage their data efficiently.
Goal
The overarching objective of the project was to assist administrators in effectively managing and establishing organizational systems while promoting workflow efficiency. By streamlining the process of creating and maintaining these systems, the project aimed to empower administrators to optimize their workflows and enhance overall productivity within the organization.
User Problem
The users expressed dissatisfaction with editing document metadata during the upload process and when conducting searches. This feedback indicated a need for improvement in the user experience related to document management and metadata editing. The project aimed to address these pain points and provide users with a more seamless and efficient way to handle document metadata both during upload and when searching for specific documents.

Competitive Analysis
In this project, my main focus was to conduct an in-depth analysis of various companies to gain insights into the prevailing standards in the current tech market. During this process, I conducted interviews with key stakeholders, including Nuxeo, where their AI Tagging features left a significant impact on our understanding of advanced document management practices. Additionally, Box Software’s innovative Tagging system, seamlessly integrated into their Automation processes, provided valuable inspiration for our own project’s development.
By studying and learning from these industry leaders, we aimed to identify best practices and leverage their successful implementations to enhance our own project’s capabilities. The insights gained from these companies played a crucial role in shaping our approach and ensuring that our project aligned with the latest trends and met the needs of the modern tech market.
Research
During the project, we encountered some unanswered questions regarding Tags and Categories, prompting me to take the initiative and conduct a round of user interviews. The main objective was to gain insights directly from the users to better understand their usage patterns and expectations regarding Tags and Categories, especially concerning their behavior during searches.
The key questions we sought to address were:
- How do users currently use Tags and Categories?
- What are users’ expectations regarding the behavior of Tags and Categories when conducting searches?
To ensure we gathered comprehensive and valuable data, I personally led the user interviews. These interviews allowed us to gain a deeper understanding of user needs, pain points, and preferences related to Tags and Categories.
The slides on the right showcase a couple of examples from the presentation I delivered to stakeholders. These slides effectively summarized the findings and key takeaways from the user interviews, which, in turn, informed our decision-making process and guided the project’s direction.
By conducting user interviews and presenting the results to stakeholders, we aimed to create a user-centered approach, ensuring that the final solution aligned with users’ expectations and provided an optimal experience when working with Tags and Categories.
